License Application

Note: All Category B (Provisional) Applicants should use the specific Category B (Provisional) Application found under “Provisional License Application” on this website.

What category of licensure is applicable to me?
Category A:
Category A applicants are Registered Dietitians who are currently registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), OR are already provisionally licensed and are seeking to convert a Category B license to Category A. All out of state applicants who are Registered Dietitians apply under Category A, not Reciprocity via Category D.

Category B:
Category B applicants have completed their education component, internship component, and have received an “Authorization to Test” Letter from the Commission on Dietetic Registration. Applicants need not to have taken the CDR exam to apply for a Category B license (aka Provisional license), but need to provide your transcripts, and Internship Verification statement, along with the CDR Authorization to Test letter. Category B applicants then have 6 months to pass the CDR exam to upgrade to a Category A license for the balance of the issuance fee, which is $90. If exam is passed 6 months to one year after Category B license is granted, then applicant must pay entire fee of $175. Provisional (Category B) licenses expire after one (1) year.

Category C:
Category C applicants hold a baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a major course of study in human nutrition, nutrition education, foods and nutrition, dietetics, community nutrition or public health nutrition. The NCBDN will review application and notify applicant of eligibility status for Category C licensure, which includes subsequent completion of an A.N.D.-equivalent supervised practice program and examination for NC licensure only. Please contact NCBDN if interested in a Category C license.

Category D:
Category D applicants are currently licensed by another state and are seeking licensure by reciprocity. Only states with equivalent licensing requirements, as determined by the Board, will be considered. Registered Dietitians should apply under category A.

Category E:
Category E applicants hold a doctorate degree from a regionally accredited college or university in human nutrition, nutrition education, foods and nutrition or public health nutrition, or an equivalent course of study to be approved by the Board. Registered Dietitians should apply under category A.

*Please note, the above descriptions only include the statutory requirements for licensure. Category C, D, and E have additional rule-defined requirements which must be met before licensure will be granted. Please contact the NCBDN office for details.
