Temporary Background Check Due to Covid-19 Crisis

Recognizing that many agencies and organizations that provide for preparation of fingerprint cards have temporarily ceased operations, on April 1, 2020, after consulting with legal counsel, the North Carolina Board of Dietetics/Nutrition (NCBDN) decided to allow licensure applicants to elect to authorize the NCBDN to complete a non-fingerprint based criminal history investigation through CastleBranch Corporation. This is not mandatory. Applicants can choose NOT to elect this option and wait until fingerprint services are available to move forward with the licensure process. But, recognizing the need for health care workers, and that the criminal background check may be the only step delaying some applicants from obtaining licensure, the Board decided to allow such applicants to elect this temporary process in order to move forward with licensure. Those who choose to move forward in this manner should be aware that this criminal record check does not replace the required fingerprint-based criminal history record investigation described in N.C. Gen. Stat. § 90-357.6. Rather, a criminal history record check utilizing one’s fingerprints will be required at a later date, once it is available.

The NCBDN felt this was the best temporary solution that would respect the requirements of the statute, while also upholding the Board’s duty to protect public. As provided in the statute, applicants will bear the cost of the later fingerprint check run through the NC Department of Public Safety ($38.00 CBC fee paid upon application). The Board will bear the cost of the temporary criminal record check, if elected, to be run through CastleBranch Corporation.

If you would like to proceed with the temporary background check, please note the following:
1. The Authorization posted here as a PDF must be completed and returned to the NCBDN either through email: info@ncbdn.org, fax: 919-882-1776, or upload to your application portal. Temp Authorization

2. Once the completed authorization is received, our staff will initiate an electronic invitation to go to your email on file, directly from CastleBranch Corporation.

3. NOTE: This electronic invitation contains their standard language indicating a “Consumer report” will be run; however, upon clicking “START PROCESS” in the email, you will note that the NCBDN is not requesting a consumer report. Rather, a State and national criminal background check will be completed upon your authorization. NO CREDIT CHECK WILL BE RUN OR COLLECTED.

4. Once you complete the CastleBranch process, the NCBDN will be able to monitor your results, and move forward with processing your application if this is the last item to be completed.

5. If information is returned that was not reported on your application, and such information was required to be reported in your application, you will be contacted to provide further details.

We appreciate your flexibility as this very fluid situation is managed. If you have any further questions, please contact info@ncbdn.org.
